8: Enneagram Type Eight | Core Fears & Desires at Work

Use your strength in ways that encourage healthy growth

We have all had experiences with people who use their strength in unhealthy ways. For my, sadly my father was on of those people. He seemed to be angry all of the time and there was always something wrong with what my sister, my brother, and I was doing. We were the recipients of many stern lectures growing up.

Listening to Jon and Liz in my most recent podcast interview gave me some insight into those early years with my dad. I used to think he was just being mean for the sake of being mean… but now I think it’s quite possible that he was trying to teach us three kids how to grow into strong adults. And maybe, it just came across in the wrong way…

We call these misunderstandings sender distortions. It happens when you relay a message with the intent to be understood, but the receiver of your message intuits something entirely different than you intended.
